Mech Monday:Weakest mech of all time!

Posted by wars128 on October 29, 2007

Todays post entails what is probably very popular trivia question: what mech, in terms of overall firepower, points wise, is the weakest? No its not the Charger, or any of the the 20 ton Bug Trio. its the Ostscout series, which has first and second place. Second place it has because the original level one version only has a single medium laser, and the first level two design had no weapons at all….Sounds like a true scout to me!

busy next month and other things…

Posted by wars128 on October 25, 2007

This upcoming month is gonna be a doozy. Two papers, a bunch of life stuff, and this National Novel writing Month thing I am going to do will leave me with little time to do a show.for Nanowrimo, I have to write a 50,000 word story from Nov. 1, to Nov 31. Yikes!!, but I want to do it. Maybe this will finally motivate me to get my Battletech fan fiction done. Luckily, I have 2 pre recorderd shows that just need to be editied, and i’ll try to get some more done, but i’m not sure about it. The only way it could happen is if peaople request various designs, because I don’t have the time to look around for one….
With this story I will be working on, I had originally planned for the story arc to not have the Jihad in it, but now, after I looked over that paper i did on the Jihad, I think it will be for the best. If I actually get this done, I will weekly post chapters from the story, maybe, though I have no idea when that would start, since I want the whole first story to be 100,00 words maybe, and im not doing that many words for naowrimo…I will be dropping hints on what the story is about, its title, etc. Also, I apologize for the limited content on the blog this week, things have been very busy for me recently, and hopefully next week will be easier.

Mech Monday:First Contact

Posted by wars128 on October 23, 2007

Sorry about the delay folks, lets get started. Many of you know the Shadowhawk, many know its stats by heart. Unfourtunatly, the original version gets some love, but cannot compare to some of the newer level 1 mechs. I think I may have found something that it could do quite well at: First Contatct. No, not the movie, but being a first response vehicle to enemy forces. think about it. It has the AC-5 and LRM 5 to snipe away at the enemy as they close, enough armor to take some hits, enough mobility to reposition, and its SRMs and Medium Laser when the enemy closes. I can see a Clint or Vulcan work in this, as well. Even slower mechs, such as the Marauder(Not that anyone would ever use it in this role)will work.

Mech Moday is coming later, heres something else first. I may have mentioed on a couple shows that I have been working on a Battletech Fan Fic. In an effort for me to actually get it done(its been in my head for atlest 3 years now..) I have signed up for National Novel Writing Month. Although the minimum word limit is 50,000 words, I hope to get much more than that. It starts Nv 1rst.
Wish me luck!

Weekend in review

Posted by wars128 on October 21, 2007

This weekend I did quite a few Battletech related things. Heres what I did/learned this weekend:
1. classicbattletech.com forums, specifically the fan articles section, consistently puts out great reviews of mechs, vehciles, etc, and they have some great discusions on there. When I research for a MOTW or VOTW, I first look to see if its up there. A great resource!
2 Been playing vehicles more on MM, might just be getting a hang of them. Ive also played pretty much every cannon level one design, and quite a few level 2s, mech wise.
More to come, perhaps.

Tro Thursday!

Posted by wars128 on October 18, 2007

I apologize for no blog posts this week besides monday. I was off monday and tuesday for fall break, and really needed the time to relax, and i’m not sure what ahppened yesterday. anyways, lets get started. Todays TRO is 3060, and is importnant in a few ways. First off, it is the first TRO to showcase Clan vehicles, so if you want to know more about them, you get this book. Also, this TRO features the very first Protomechs, along with building rules for them, so thats also nice. Otherwise, the book has a couple nice designs, from the Demolisher II, to the Gladius, to mechs like the Viking and Sirrocco. I like this one, its definatly up there in my favorite TROs. Nothing really bad I can say about it, its just a solid TRO. 5 outa 5. Sam

Mech Monday:Mecs best for Mercs

Posted by wars128 on October 15, 2007

so you want to sart a Merc unit, but you don’t kno which mechs would be best. Here are some things that will help you know what will work for you.
First off, Mercenarys favor cheap, effective designs, so normally no XLs or Light engined designs, or atleast not a lot of them. Second, Mercenarys like flashbulbs(which what all energy weapon mechs are called), such as the wolfhound, awesome, etc, because then the unit does not have to buy ammo. Lastly, Mercenaries normally buy older designs, and rarely have cutting edge new technology. I hope this helps.

A little problem

Posted by wars128 on October 11, 2007

I am running out of podcasting space on my podomatic account(the guys that host my show), and I’m not sure what to do when it fills up completely, and i’d like you, the listeners opinion on it. First off, I could remove shows from the site, but i’d rather not do that. I want people to start listening to the show from the start. If I take them out , where would i host them, anyways? I could pay 20 dollars a year to host them on this site for 1 gig of storage, or i could pay podomatic 100 dollars a year for 2 gigs of space, no adds, global maps, etc.
Help me decide!

TRO Thursday!

Posted by wars128 on October 11, 2007

Todays TRO s my brand new 3050U. I will be giving an in-depth review of it in an upcoming episode of the podcast, so I won’t talk much here, but i’ll tell you the Important things:
1. $35 For something I pretty much already own! They used to be 25 dollars…
2. All the IS and clan designs look badass!
3. Nearly all the Star League designs(This book takes the mechs, aerospace fighters, and vees from 2750 and puts them in with the updated IS designs and the original 16 clan mechs)look awful…..
I’m still unsure if its worth the price, but if you are able to poke around in one..do so..overall its got some great artwork with the IS models..for some odd reason, a lot of them are fighting Elementals…

Weapon Wednesday!

Posted by wars128 on October 10, 2007

I want to love the Rocket Launcher. At first, I saw it as a low weight way to give light mechs long range firepower, which many are in dire need of. the only problem is, with that +1 to hit, and it being a OS system, if you miss, tough luck pal. I really want to like it, but I cannot. The only way that it would actaully work is, say, replaceing a LRM 10 or 15 or 20 with equal # of RLs to the ammount of shots of 1 ton of ammo, but im not even sure that would work..lets see:
IS LRM 10+1 ton ammo:6 tons
12 RL 10s: 6 tons…
IS LRM 15+1 ton ammo:8 tons
8 RL 15s:8 tons
IS LRM 20+ 1 ton ammo:11
6 RL 20s:9 tons, but range drops off.
There is range issues too, but hey…its periphery tech. so the weights do equal out…but if you want really cheap mostly long range firepower and are in the periphery, or have an old Valk or archer missing its lrms, you know what to do…
